Shakespeare Santa Barbara proudly presents...

"What Shakes?"

Through the services of Elings Park we provide a yearly summer camp, called "What Shakes!" in which children are led through creative and expressive exercises and theatre games. The works of Shakespeare share universal themes, and these are highlighted in the camp‚s culminating event, a miniature production of our season's show. Camp attendees and their families are then invited, free of charge, to join us for our summer‚s production. This helps children create a link between themselves and professional Shakespeare, demystifying the Bard for years to come.

Another aspect of our educational program is our school tour. Each year, four company members create a new and interactive show to perform at regional elementary, middle and high schools. The actors perform scenes, demonstrate acting techniques, share insight into Shakespeare's language, and answer myriad, and often challenging, questions about the arts. Administrators and teachers have remarked that our program is amongst the most popular, and most educational - they have found.

Finally, we are committed to making the experience of attending any of our productions enjoyable and inspiring. To that end, we offer "talk backs," in which the cast stays after the show ends to discuss the play and answer questions, to interested groups. To arrange a "talk back" for your group, please contact our Education Director.

Although Shakespeare provides a bounty of material suitable for long hours of learned discourse, our focus remains on the excitement, relevance, and downright fun inherent in his words. Shakespeare Santa Barbara's artistic staff and company members create each year‚s production with a deep love for these wonderful plays, and it‚s that we want to share.
